My major question about the in-home surgical procedure is why didn't Ben at least put a few shots of whiskey in her first? The baby's umbilical cord wasn't pulsing, so it's not like she could've passed it through her blood stream to him? You know there's plenty of spare hard liquor at Meredith's house. And he got it! Both April and the baby live, and if the way she and Jackson look at each other over the baby's too-large-to-be-properly-newborn head, they'll be back together soon too. Meanwhile, April gives birth to her and Jackson's (as yet unnamed) baby girl via C-section on Meredith's kitchen table, because of course she does, as (1) a pregnancy on Grey's can't pass by without some massive complication and (2) Ben needed redemption from the horrible hallway massacre earlier in the season.
As ever, Grey's brings hope to the dark and twisty. Amelia is still a mess and a half (and frankly, so is Owen), but there she is, happy, next to a good man.

I have no idea what the writing is doing with Owen and Amelia half the time, but most movies and TV shows subscribe to the idea that a woman has to be de-complicated or solved somehow before she's worth being married to.
Anyway, there's some panic - Amelia gets particularly upset when she overhears Meredith telling Owen ( accurately) that Cristina might have been the greatest love of his life - and at one point, Mer and Amelia and Maggie run away to a convenience store for slushies, but they come back, and Amelia makes it down the aisle. Most sibling relationships on television are either overly close or overly acrimonious, but what I love about Meredith and Amelia's dynamic is that they are two people who very literally, very seriously do not like each other very much, but who are committed to loving each other anyway, which I feel like is how most people feel about the majority of their family members in real life. Most of the episode is dedicated to Amelia's indecision and Meredith's one-day stint as her person and her entire family. ON BEHALF OF DEREK AND AMELIA'S IMAGINARY MOM, I AM OFFENDED. Amelia has a near-hysterical phone call with her mother the morning of the ceremony, and tries to refute her mom's claims that the wedding is too soon and that she's making a horrible mistake, none of which is in line with what we know about the Shepherd family.

In the spirit of a festive season finale, I hereby vow that if Douchebeard isn't dead, I'll learn his character's real name next season.īack to the beginning: Amelia's mother and sisters aren't coming to the wedding, which is code for "we couldn't afford for Neve Campbell or Tyne Daly to come back," and the writing spins their absence as disapproval of Amelia's choice to marry Owen. Seeing Alex punch Douchebeard right in the beard, repeatedly, was pretty satisfying, although I hope he didn't accidentally kill him. Jo slurs, "He doesn't even know my real name," and before Douchebeard can ask how she got into medical school and a residency program under an assumed name, Alex comes home, sees Jo half-naked, and starts beating the shit out of Douchebeard. This is annoying both because it's obvious and because it's something that could've been settled by Jo saying, "Hey, I love you and I want to marry you, but I'm married to this horrible person," and then Alex being all, "Oh, I feel disappointed, but I understand." She gets drunk and spills the beans about her past to Douchebeard and he brings her home to tuck her in. She can't, because she's still married to a man who violently abused her years ago.
Let's start with that last part, which was the most annoying, because of course it's not that Jo doesn't want to marry Alex. Bailey too, as if he gave up his maiden name for Miranda when they got married.) Callie and Arizona make up! Jo's horrible reason for remaining a spinster is revealed! Jackson and April's baby is born! Owen and Amelia get married! Ben redeems himself! (It's a testament to Bailey's place on the show and in my heart that I always want to call Ben Dr. Just because nothing horrible happened doesn't mean the episode wasn't jam-packed. (The absence of major catastrophe did not stop me from crying six separate times.) Is it just me, or was that the least traumatic finale in Grey's Anatomy history? I'm not necessarily complaining - it is, objectively speaking, nice when none of your favorite television characters die - but it's hard to get a proper sense of closure on a season of Grey's without a major catastrophe going down.
